Popcorn Stitch Squares Bag

The popcorn stitch has been "popping" up all over Pinterest, and I was suddenly inspired to use some really bright colours I had in my stash.

I made one of these GRANNY SQUARE BAGS a while back - you only need 13 squares and the bag works up in no time at all.

I didn't use a pattern - just made it up as I went, adding in a light grey and dark grey for contrast:

I am so totally in love with these delightfully puffy flower centres that I have used them on a whole lot of colourful projects - I cannot wait to show you what I have made!

(PS:    The pattern for the Thirteen Squares Granny Bag can be found HERE)

  3. Hi! I just came across your crochet blog and I love your work! Everything you make is so beautiful. I have just started to learn how to crochet and I was thinking of making a small granny square throw. Could you possible tell me how to make the square you have done in the bag? I think I know how to make the background part of it but how do you incorporate the puff part? It would be so lovely to make as a small blanket. Thank you for the inspiration! Or I should say inspirations! :)

    1. Hi Mally! Thank you! I have not written out the pattern for this square yet (on my to-do list!). I do, however, have a pattern for a simplified popcorn flower square (part of a beginners crochet along you are welcome to join) http://zootyowlcards.blogspot.com/2014/04/popcorn-flower-square-baby-groovyghan.html. I have done a little photo tutorial here too explaining how to do the puff stitch! Hope this is helpful! Let me know.

  5. Yes, that helps! Could I just ask what type of yarn you used for this bag and size hook so I can get an idea how big the squares would turn out being? I really like the look of this bag and don't want to make my squares too big or too small cause that would distort the shape that you created which is just perfect!!

    Thank you!!!!!

  6. Hi Zelna! I think I have it on how to do the puff stitch, but I am concerned about the yarn. I am not sure what thickness of yarn to use so the square aren't too big. Here in the US, worsted weight is the most common and the square would come out huge if I did them for as many rounds as you did. I'm thinking your yarn must be pretty thin? Like sock type yarn perhaps? Correct me if I am wrong. What yarn did you use for this fabulous bag? I really would love to try making a bag like this. It's so ....me!!! :)

    1. Hi Mally! DK is 8ply = US light worsted weight yarn. Your worsted weight yarn is 10ply the equivalent of our Aran yarn. If you were to "draw" a square around the bag the dimensions are 35cm x 35cm. I have used Aran before to make one of these bags using a 5.00mm hook - finale measurement was about 40cm x 40cm on a 6 row square (so not that much bigger). US Sport Yarn (baby yarn) is equivalent to our 4ply - so if I figure correctly a double strand of that would be = to our 8 ply. I think sock yarn is going to be too thin (that is equivalent to our 2ply /3ply). Just by the way Deramores in the UK delivers internationally - Stylecraft Special DK is a fantastic "all purpose" yarn - their prices are really good and their service is outstanding. Please post some photos on my Zooty Owl Facebook page when you are done!

  7. That was very helpful, thank you. I will try Deramores at once. Could you just tell me what is the size of each square? That would really keep me on track I think. You've been so gracious helping me with this and I truly appreciate it!
